In Solidarity I Stand

When I ask you to stand in solidarity with me, what do I mean? Do I mean you must accept my beliefs/values? No. Do I ask you to acknowledge them? Yes. Do I ask you to follow my way of life? No. Do I ask you to value my life? Yes.

I’m sure most people are aware of the horrific events that dawned upon Orlando this week. As many of us saw in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, others saw their last moments of life brutally snatched by Omar Mateen.

This was a hate crime. A hate crime against the LGBT community. Whether it was a terrorist attack or not, let us not deflect from the fact that it was a hate crime.
There is no justification for it and when I say we must stand in solidarity to support the LGBT community, we must do so. In the same way I call upon the world to stand in solidarity with Palestinians, Syrians, Muslims and other targeted groups, I ask each and every one of you to take a moment to stand in solidarity with the LGBT community.

We live in a cruel world where the labels attached to us act as a price tag on our lives. We condemn the capitalist society for its ways yet we fail to realise our own corrupt ways. A life is a life. When one is lost, another is spent grieving. Whatever your beliefs, whatever your values, murder is murder, hate crime is hate crime.

I feel disgusted by the response of some people to the events in Orlando and I cannot even bring myself to repeat some of the comments made. We humans are the root of so much evil. I don’t want to believe that people can be so heartless and ignorant of the real motivations for this atrocity the world has seen, yet I know such heartlessness exists in the world.

My heart goes out to the LGBT community and I hope that one day, we can all walk this earth without having to fear the judgment and actions of others because of the life we live.

Rest in Peace to all those precious lives lost. To those grieving the loss, I pray that you are given strength to live your lives in the name of those lost. To anyone struck by the events, may you too be given the strength to live your life without fear and difficulty. To the world and all of its people: I pray that one day, we all understand.

All Love xoxo
